With 11 nominations, the complex sci-fi thriller “Everything Everywhere All at Once” dominated the Oscar Nominations 2023. It was closely followed by the World War I epic “All Quiet on the Western Front” and, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” both receiving nine nominations each.
The two highest-grossing movies of the year, “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” are included in the best picture contest, along with “Elvis,” a musical biopic that was popular with moviegoers last summer. The semi-autobiographical “The Fabelmans” directed by Steven Spielberg, “Tár,” a drama about a violent conductor, “Women Talking,” a look at the members of a repressive religious community, and “Triangle of Sadness are among the other contenders.
Best Director is a category where only men got the nominations this year. As the last two best director winners were female—Jane Campion for “The Power of the Dog” and Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland”—there were some hopes that Sarah Polley, the filmmaker of “Women Talking,” may also get the nomination.
Paul Mescal‘s moving performance in director Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun is a highlight of the competitive Best Actor race this year. The poignant, almost contemplative examination of a young girl’s dwindling recollections of her father has an eventually devastating outcome and seems both urgent and intimate. Mescal effectively captures the strong bond shared by the father-daughter characters with just a few phrases and his body language. He weeps nearly uncontrollably in front of the camera in a scene that is both terrifying and unforgettable.
But Surely he will get a stiff competition from Colin Farrell who has got a very high chance of winning he award.
With their outstanding performances in Everything Everywhere All at Once and Tár, respectively, Michelle Yeoh and Cate Blanchett seem to be the front-runners in Best Actress category. Blonde drew a lot of criticism for how it depicted Marilyn Monroe’s life and career; even though Ana de Armas produced a career-best performance in the movie, this appears to have hurt her chances of winning this year’s Oscar.
Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu turned in the best performances in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category. The plot of Evelyn Quan Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once depends on both actors. Nonetheless, it appears that, given the overwhelmingly positive reception, Angela Bassett might be the one to win the award.
